VANCOUVER, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Sian Combrink traces a large black ink print on a piece of white paper with a dry paintbrush.

She's tracing calligraphy, and the symbol Combrink is tracing means "love" in Chinese. This is the first time she tries calligraphy for relaxation.

"It's so relaxing," Combrink tells Xinhua as she continues to trace. No actual calligraphy yet. That comes later.

Recently, Combrink has become increasingly interested in mindfulness and relaxation. "That is something that I am really working on right now because I suffer very badly from anxiety," she says. "I've actually taken group therapy courses and we do mindful awareness and meditation. That's why I'm here today. Just to walk around and learn."

She's at a booth set up at a wellness show by the Soul Mind Body Centre, a wellness and spiritual center that has recently started offering ancient Chinese calligraphy as part of its service.

"I didn't even know what this was until I came here now," Combrink says. "It creates a sense of peace and you get to see what you create."

This type of calligraphy is called "yibizi", says Lavana Lea, who is working at the booth for the centre. "It mainly means oneness writing, one stroke," she introduces. "This writing is from ancient China. It's part of the meditative experience."

Like Combrink, about 30,000 attendees were attracted to the Vancouver Wellness Show, visiting 300 vendors over three days at the Vancouver Convention Centre, trying more tender approaches to get mindfulness and relaxation.

The Wellness Show was created by Jeannette Savard 25 years ago. "It's my baby," she says.

Over two decades, people's concept of wellness has evolved, she tells Xinhua.

"Years ago, it was vitamins and supplements, but now we've got super foods -- the chia seeds and pumpkins seeds," she says. "Trying to get your nutrition from food versus vitamins. We used to have plain, filtered water now you have oxygenated water."

She says fitness used to be about high-impact movements, but is now more focused on techniques like yoga, massage therapy and meditation.

"Years ago, going to a chiropractor was a little on the alternative edge," Savard says. "Now people go to naturopath doctors, they're going for IV injections of vitamins, they're going to see their energy trainer."

A walk around the show-floor reveals hundreds of booths featuring spine tests, exercise clothes, life insurance and various kinds of foods, including fermented tea and gluten-free snacks.

At one booth, a woman lays prone in a chair, face-down, getting a shiatsu massage. A sign above another booth says "Get Fit Fast". There, four people balance on small platforms that vibrate, their bodies jiggling, apparently getting fit.

Mindfulness, relaxation and meditation has become one of the fastest-growing elements of the show, Savard says. "That whole area is really expanding."

She blames the digital age and our lives of constant distraction and stimulation. "People are so stressed out. They're so busy," she says.

At one end of the hall, curtains wrap around the Bodhi Meditation Centre. Instructors are giving brief introductions to meditation and relaxation techniques. Here, they're calling them "healings".

A reporter takes a cross-legged position on a soft mat. Rivka, the instructor, leads him with a microphone.

She tells him to close his eyes and to focus on relaxing his body parts: his head, neck, shoulders, spine, hips and toes, with soothing, dreamy music playing.

After a few minutes, they stand up together and Rivka shows the reporter how to gently tap his head and body with open palms to "release stress and tension."

"People experience healing energies in different ways," Rivka says. "It can be heat or cold. Yesterday, one of the ladies was describing a swirling feeling, the feeling of moving back and forth."

Sometimes people get emotional, she says. "Because it can provoke a lot of energies within us."

Savard, the show organizer, says that last year, meditative and relaxation techniques and businesses comprised about 10 percent of the show. Now it's more like 35 percent.

"You almost have to schedule time to turn your phone off, or turn your I-pad off, and take that time away to chill and relax," she says.

The Vancouver Wellness Show wraps up on Sunday.
